Tomiño

Tomiño is located in the centre of Baixo Miño Region. It borders on Miño River, Portugal and O Rosal to the south, on Tui to the east and on Oia to the west. It is the largest municipality on the region, with 106,6 km2. It has a population of 13662 inhabitants (2014  census).

Concerning the tourism, Tomiño stands out because of its abundance of green spaces to practice outdoor sports such as cycling, trekking, etc.

Moreover, there are lots of places with cultural and ethnographic insterest in Tomiño.

Seixo Square and Tomiño Market

Seixo square and Tomiño Market are located in the centre of Tomiño, near the town hall. Both of them were recently remodelled and constitute the centre of social life in Tomiño. In Seixo square the visitor will find accommodation, restaurants and bars. It is a place designed for people’s use and enjoyment. Currently, Seixo square present five sculptures belonging to the Miño I Sculpture International Symposium, with works by sculptors of varied nationalities.

Tomiño Market offers to the visitor a very wide selection of local products, in a completely redesigned placed which is worth visiting.

Miño River path and Espazo Fortaleza

Miño River plays a central role in Tomiño and offers a privileged natural environment for those who search for natural areas and outdoor activities. The Miño River Path was recently created. It runs parallel to the Miño River from Amizade Bridge until the limit of O Rosal, where the path connects with the path of O Rosal.

The Espazo Fortaleza appears when the path reach the river beach of Goian. Espazo Fortaleza is a fortress in the riverside which has been restored and currently offers a recreational space near the path and the river.

Santa María de Tomiño Church

The parochial church of Santa Maria de Tomiño is located in the centre of the town. Its style is Gothic and it was the church of an ancient Benedictine monastery. It is a very important example of Romanesque, despite the alterations suffered about 1809.

It presents an only nave, quadrangular abse and the main façade presents four archivolts supported by four pairs of columns.

Monte Tetón – Petroglifos

It is located in the parish of Tebra. The Archaeological Ecopark of Teton Hill presents examples of primitive art of european relevance. The prehistoric rock engravings are grouped in two main places, Portaxes and Real Seco, where a combination of bowl shapes, animal and human shapes, quadrangular shapes and combinations of concentric circles appear.

The ones with 18 concentric rings and a diameter of 350 cm are the largest ones in Europe.

Escola Indiana Unión do Porvenir

Category: Ethnographic heritage

The school Union del Porvenir was promoted by a society of emigrants from Tomiño living in New York. Its main aim was to promote the school training with progressive and liberal approaches as well as to promote ludic and recreational activities for the members’ families.

The building was abandoned and remained in ruins from the 70’s until the first decade of the XXI, when its restauration began. It was inaugurated in 2013.
